the pursuit of perfect-ness

by z.lynn

“We come to know love, not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” ~ Sam Keen

Life can be complicated…love, even more so. complicated, most often when we make it that way. searching for ‘the one’ and either not finding him or thinking that he is ‘the one’ only to find out later that he is NOT perfect – can be frustrating. Endless pursuits towards fame and fortune often leave many feeling unfulfilled or despondent. Even life’s day-to-day hustle can wear us out. Why is that?

For me and i think a lot of people, it’s the constant ‘pursuit of perfect-ness’. Although I don’t set out to ‘be perfect’, I find myself disappointed if I don’t get ‘this’ or i don’t get ‘there’ or if I don’t do ‘this’ – ‘that way’ – RIGHT NOW. these are self-imposed, unwritten, unnecessary requirements that I’m placing on myself. because ‘THAT’ is probably something that is not in my budget [right now, anyways ;-)] or something that I can find a way to do without until I can get it or something that i really don’t need; ‘THERE’ is a place where someone ELSE is and im still on my way to and ‘THAT WAY’ is the way that someone ELSE does it.

I want to do it MY way and enjoy the peaks and valleys along the way. not to say that i don’t already do it my way and not to say that there aren’t goals that we should set for ourselves or guidelines that we should follow or that there aren’t people that we can emulate, who are where we want to be or do what we want to do and we can learn from their experience… (inhaling deeply, pausing…)

I’m just saying that I don’t want to beat myself up because I don’t blog as often as I would like … or because I let my emotions get the best of me (a lot) … or because, without MUCH manipulation, my hair doesn’t curl like hers … or because my pictures don’t turn out like my fav super-mega-star photographer … or because i cant always remember the scripture to use to enunciate the faith overflowing in my heart…or because I don’t exercise regularly… yada, yada, yada…

(Note to self: – in my Madea voice – ‘hellur… you’re not perfect…’)

there will always be someone to compare myself to or some mountainous goal to conquer…our heavenly father only expects the best that i can do. so i will do my best. and if my best isn’t where someone else is or achieves what someone else has or whatever, then SO BE IT!

as with anything, practice makes perfect. and if I regularly do the work to get to where I need to be then I will get there.

so, I must take each mountain one step at a time and stop trying to be perfect.

perfection? TBD

the best ME that I can be? I’m right here, right now!

now, let’s get to work!

😉

It’s a new day…

by z.lynn

That song that Jennifer Hudson has been singing in those Weight Watchers commercials is stuck in my head! Mostly because I’ve been away from my business for too long and it’s time to get to work! But also because I feel that I’ve finally gotten my father and personal life stabilized enough that I can return to some semblance of my business at least until I’m back 100%.

“It’s a new dawn, a new day
a new life for me
And I’m feeling good”

“It’s a new day!!”

So thanks, JHud!

Momentary Sanity

by z.lynn

I don’t really remember how the old saying goes but it basically makes reference to how it takes a lot to make a grown man cry. Yet, tonight, I saw my dad cry for the first time ever in all of my 37 years.

In his reality, he felt undeniably certain that my husband and I were about to do him in. He thought that we had him shut up in a box or a casket yet he could get up and walk around and reach out and touch us. He said that we planned to put him in our truck and set it aflame even though I was sitting right next to him, in the truck. His mind told him that I put something in his food and drink to make him ‘see things’. This is the face of dementia.

Although, on August 6th, last month, he denied that he ever knew me, I felt that he could care for himself. Despite getting hardly no sleep each night always holding to the fear that he would climb up and fall or tumble down the set of 15+ stairs in my home, I thought he would be just fine. Even though he had fallen down and broken his wrist and elbow week before last, when tripping over a huge shopping bag that he’d placed next to him, while trying to find this invisible item on the floor, I thought I could help him. I just want to believe.

It tore at my whole heart and soul to hear him cry so loudly and inconsolably that I was sure that my neighbors 3 doors down could hear. And to know that his tears and pain were caused by the false belief that I wanted to harm him was unfathomable to me. I broke down.

I tried to reason with him the other night…why would I bring you out to my house and take care of you day and night if I wanted to hurt you? Why would I lose sleep, lose my sanity, lose my cool, lose my empathy, lose my mind…if I didn’t love you and want the best of health for you? Why would I allow you to call me out of my name when I’m trying to help you and you think that I’m doing it wrong or that I’m putting something in your medicine and food? Why would I, being the germophobic that I am, allow you to wear your only-God-knows-how-dirty-sneakers across my beige carpet? (One word – splatter. Ewww.) Why would I still keep you and care for when I knew full well that I have to clean my bathroom 2-3 times a day because your aim is waaayyy off? My sister tried reminding him that no one was trying to hurt him. But his mind told him that everyone else was wrong – but him.

None of what I’ve gone through these past few months matters. I want my dad. I need my dad. I don’t know what’s worse-me holding on to the notion that he would fully come back to me or him thinking that I would actually hurt him.

At the end of July, we had a long discussion about his mom working odd jobs and his dad working in the hospital and how much he loved his kids and grandkids and he would love to re-visit Fort Campbell, KY where he served in the Army decades ago. Some things I never even knew. Having this conversation was great because he was highly upset with me since the day before. But the kicker is that, during this conversation, he thought I was some Jamaican woman whom he had met at his old apt. When I told him my name, he looked at me like I had 10 horns on my head and said, ‘That’s my daughters’ name, too!’ I couldn’t help but shed a little tear.

I struggled with the thought of having to bathe my father, so I called my brother. Call me a wuss or whatever but seeing this other person that he has become is bad enough let alone being privy to all his ‘business’…i just couldn’t do it.

As he begged me to take him home tonight, he told me that he was sorry for all he was putting me through. I guess he figured that if he’d apologize, I wouldn’t ‘hurt’ him. I said, ‘Dad, I know, you just haven’t been yourself lately.’ I just don’t know if I can help you find yourself again.

I lost my mom to cancer in 2001, 5 months before my daughter, her first grandchild, was to be born. I feel as if I’ve lost my father too, now. He’s only fully with me in my memory. His momentary lapses in sanity make it seem like he’s a totally different person.

A friend stopped by tonight to pick up something and spent a few mins talking to me. She told me that she understands what I’m going through with my dad’s dementia because her mom has Alzheimer’s. ‘Its rough. Maybe we should arrange a play-date!’ I laughed hard and loudly. Thanks B, for the best few mins I’ve had in a while!

So while I won’t ‘see’ my father as much as I would like, I guess I will have to relish the moments when he is ‘with’ me and look forward to the time when all of our ailments will be a thing of the past.

I love you and I miss you, Dad!

#8 – All Things Bridal – Maid/Matron of Honor

by z.lynn

I am so sorry for the delay in getting these to you. It’s been pretty ridiculous around here. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Without further ado, the series continues here…

Maid or Matron of Honor

This position in the wedding party carries much honor but also a lot of responsibility. Among other things, the MOH is responsible for the bachelorette party, help the bride in choosing the details (dress, color scheme, theme, location, etc), planning the bridal shower, and the list goes on and on!

When choosing someone to fill this weighty role, some of these tips may be helpful:

  • Are they old enough and responsible enough to fulfill all of the duties – Accompanying you to find a dress and shoes is one thing, but can she plan a bridal shower – complete with sending invitations, helping you register and purchasing food (costs can be split with other BM’s)? Does she handle pressure well? As the days get closer and closer to the wedding, you will need to rely on her more than ever. If she stresses easily, you will become stressed. Is she organized? She will be helping you to keep track of most of the goings-on of your wedding. Does she have the time? Is her calendar already full? Most of us have jobs and family obligations not to mention other things that we are involved with. She should be available or be able to make herself available to assist you with whatever you need.
  • The MOH does not have to be a close friend or family member – It is customary to want to honor your friend, your sister or best cousin. But if they can’t fulfill all of the obligations of the MOH position, there is nothing wrong with considering someone else. If you feel as if you have to include that close friend or sister, there is nothing wrong with having more than 1 MOH, if necessary.
  • The MOH must be supportive of your decisions but tactful when necessary – The MOH is your right-hand-girl to help you with all aspects of planning and executing your wedding day and other events leading up to that day. She must help you make decisions but also support and, sometimes, communicate your decisions to the rest of the bridal party. There may be times, however, when she will need to kind of, rein you in, so to speak, if you may be getting close to your budget or don’t have enough time to complete some task, for example. Since the planning and the day itself can be stressful, the MOH should help to remind you of your obligations firmly but tactfully.
  • What is her disposition? – Is she friendly and cooperative? Or can she sometimes be a complainer or even jealous of you? Let’s be real, just because you’ve been friends, like, forever, doesn’t mean that she’s going to be the best choice when it comes to having someone who will do whatever is necessary to help you on your day. Ultimately, your MOH is cooperative, willing to do the job, can criticize without being critical, trustworthy, not selfish, knows when to compromise, and, among other things is truly happy for you even though she might not be in a relationship.

Although the MOH has a lot of responsibility, choosing the right person or persons will make your day even better!

#7 – All Things Bridal – Favorite Web Resources

by z.lynn

ok, i’ll admit it…i’m a web addict. i swear i have some type of disorder or something, because when i’m online, it’s nothing for me to have like 30 tabs open on one Mozilla window and 20 or so on the other and i keep switching back and forth. when something interesting pops up, i just have to take a look. so, while planning my own wedding [and ever since then :-))], i’ve compiled a list of some pretty great online resources to use when planning your own fete.

enjoy and share a few of your own, if they’re not here already! LOL

its a pretty long list. take your time to review it, take a break if necessary and come back later…but most importantly, enjoy.

#4 – All Things Bridal – Romantic Gestures

by z.lynn

i just got in from a wedding where i was the second shooter for the amazing Atlanta photographer, Zac Long of FengLong Photography. thank you again Zac for giving me the opportunity to shoot along with you. i had a great time, learned a lot and have some great experience under my belt.

during the pre-wedding candid shots, the bride received a special delivery of a long, brown box with a white ribbon around it. she opened the box to find a beautiful diamond bracelet and a note from her soon-to-be husband. his note simply declared how much he loved her and then he reminded her of the 3 words that he used to describe her the day they met. [these words have been kept secret to protect the loved! :-)] of course, there were a lot of ooh’s and awwww’s in the room among the bridal party, and rightfully so. how romantic of a gesture that was!

the marriage ceremony, with its’ traditions and practices, is all about the declaration of one’s love for their fiancee. why not make a special and memorable declaration at your wedding.

you could:

  • write your own vows or prepare list of “10 things i love about you” and read it to each other during the reception
  • send a short note/video to your fiancee, to be read before the ceremony (the night before or the day of, it’s your choice); you could even make a series of notes leading up to the big day
  • read a love poem to your spouse during the ceremony/reception
  • if you’re so inclined, write a song or poem about your fiancee and perform or recite it for them on your wedding day

these are a few simple things that come to my mind. try one or two, or come up with your own.

i’d love to hear your ideas.

please share them with me in the comments section.

see ya tomorrow,

z

SFF is here!!!

by z.lynn

what is SFF, you might ask??

well, in response to a blog post by Tofurious, i have begun my SFF posts.

SFF stands for

Shoe Fetish Friday!

you see, i have a love for shoes that cannot be compared to anything else. i’m not sure how many pairs i own, but its a lot. i think i have a shoe fetish. i love shopping for shoes, i love looking at shoes, i always notice other people’s shoes, i can’t help but love all things about shoes, but they have to be 3″ or higher. (hey, i’m 5’5″, i got to get in the game somehow!)

my husband often questions me when i bring home another pair of shoes. “they’re black (insert any color you like here). don’t you have another pair just like them” and i respond “no, these are a different style“. those who don’t share my love, can’t understand (i.e. most husbands!) it’s not just another black shoe, it’s a wedge or its a strappy or its a platform stiletto…the options are endless!

like, i just noticed the other day, as i pulled out my new-er candy apple red Y.Not platform pumps, that my old red patent Jessica Simpson platform peep toe pumps are out of style. they don’t look the same to me now, they look frumpy-ish. of course, what do i see when i go to TJMaxx the next day, my JS pumps, but newer, redone, same shoe but the platform is covered! since i have my Y.Not pumps, i’m ok for now. besides, i like my Y.Not pumps better. :-))

i recently came across a beautiful pair of L.A.M.B. shoes at 32% of the retail price! for those in the know, that’s a steal. soft, supple leather inside and out, comfortable insoles, mmmm, beautiful. i ended up returning them to the store, though. i had two problems with the shoes: 1) they run small, so i needed a half or whole size larger (no pb, i could have stretched them out; 2) i found the shoes at TJMaxx (the same time I saw the JS pumps!) and they had been picked over and scratched and scuffed to the point where I would have to change the color to get them to look right and i didn’t want to change the color because it was that color that drew me in the first place. Alas

ok, so my love for shoes is what is prompting me to make SFF a regular blog post. i’ll be out scouring the stores and the internet to find the newest and cutest shoes and reporting back to you about what i find.

here is the first official SFF shoe! (and yes, it is officially saturday on the east coast, but it’s still friday on the west coast!)

Badgley Mischka’s Randall pump found at endless.com. through endless.com, it comes in 3 colors – blue, bordo and rose (pictured below).

for those of you brides looking to add a little splash of color, these would be great!

i am in love with its soft, delicate satin petals that gently graze the open toe along with the open arch and side areas which daintily accentuate parts of the foot not normally featured.

isn’t it nice? mmmm. enjoy.

til next time,

z

😉

tuesday’s tip…communication!

by z.lynn

Effective communication within a relationship is essential.

I was fortunate enough to marry a wonderful man in the fall of 2009. I love him dearly and we have wonderful times since we have a lot in common. However, no matter how much we have in common, there will always be differences between us. I can’t stand that he leaves the toilet seat up or that his idea of cleaning is throwing bleach everywhere and letting it work its ‘magic’. Ugghhhh!! SMH!

The differences between you and your spouse may take many different forms. It may be something as simple as whether or not the toilet paper goes over or under on the roll (over, right??). However, that difference could make you and your spouse like polar opposites when it comes to how you spend and save money, for example. Either one of those differences can cause frustration, stress and major arguments.

The only one ‘easier-said-than-done’ way to handle these differences is to communicate, effectively. Communicate with each other –  not mommy or daddy or coworker or friend about what your spouse is not doing. And this communication should begin as soon as you start dating. Major things like whether or not to have children or your view of money must be discussed before you say “I DO”.

Dating? Newly engaged? Wedding date set? It’s never too late to start communicating effectively to ensure the longevity of your marriage.
